VNIndex loses 19.32 points, October 2026 opens with fourth consecutive decline

EASY STOCK · Technical Analysis Session Report
Session: 01/10/2026 VN-Index: 1,749.30 (-19.32 / -1.09%) TA Score: 2/10

⚠️ 30-SECOND SUMMARY

  • October opens with the fourth consecutive decline — VN-Index loses 19.32 points, breaking below all four key moving averages (MA20, MA50, MA150, MA200) for the first time since this report series began tracking.
  • VIC alone accounts for over 12 index points; the market recorded 344 declining stocks versus 258 advancing, including 23 floor-limit declines.
  • STB — a stock we identified in early September as one of the cleanest technical setups — falls exactly 5% and breaks below MA50 for the first time in many weeks.
  • Bucking the broad market trend entirely, HAG surges powerfully with volume exceeding four times its average, supported by debt restructuring news and record profits announced earlier.

If one number were to summarize the first trading session of October, it would be “4” — the fourth consecutive close in red for VN-Index, and also the first time the index has fallen below all four moving averages we track daily. Not a pleasant milestone, but a significant one to note.

VN-Index closed at 1,749.30 points, down 19.32 points (-1.09%) — the sharpest decline in over a week. The session displayed a typical pattern of sustained selling pressure: a brief morning bounce lifted the index to 1,765 points, but the recovery momentum faded quickly, and selling pressure from large-cap stocks drove the index lower throughout the afternoon, approaching 1,744 points at its worst. VIC alone, with a 3.47% decline, removed over 12 index points — the largest negative contribution among all stocks.

MA201,803.0
MA501,773.0
MA1501,794.8
MA2001,795.7
RSI (14)38.0
MACD Hist.-7.57

This marks the first time in our entire report series that the closing price has fallen below all four moving averages simultaneously — a complete reversal from the solid uptrend structure we documented in mid-September. RSI has retreated to 38.0, approaching oversold territory. MACD Histogram sits at -7.57, the deepest negative level recorded to date. Market breadth has also deteriorated further, with the advance/decline ratio falling to just 0.63 (109 advancing stocks versus 174 declining), continuing the weakness that has persisted since late last week.

Looking at the broader picture, this is not an isolated shock but the culmination of a difficult quarter: for Q3 overall, VN-Index declined 91.39 points (-4.91%); September alone fell 63.50 points (-3.47%). The previous support level from August 2026, around 1,715-1,750 points, now becomes the next critical test the market must navigate.

In simple terms: If previous sessions resembled someone carefully descending a staircase, today is like the final step has collapsed entirely — there are no familiar support points left, and the market is searching for new, lower ground to stabilize on.

STB: when a once-solid setup begins to crack

In early September, we described STB as one of the most convincing technical setups on the market — a breakout confirmed by substantial volume, followed by a healthy consolidation on light volume. Nearly a month later, that narrative has shifted dramatically.

Today, STB fell exactly 5%, closing at 70,300 VND — the sharpest decline in the banking sector and among the worst performers across the entire market. Trading volume reached 5.26 million shares, well above the 20-period average of 3.07 million — indicating this was not a decline due to lack of buyers, but rather a session with genuine selling participation. The close was near the session low (6.8% away), and critically, the stock has broken below its MA50 for the first time since the early-month breakout.

Re-evaluating the thesis STB’s Trend Template structure currently still meets 7 out of 8 criteria — from a long-term technical perspective, the stock has not yet “broken” completely. However, the break below MA50 combined with confirmed volume is a signal that demands serious attention, quite different from the light-volume pullbacks we previously characterized as “healthy.” RSI has fallen to 31.5, near oversold levels — a zone where capitulation buying often appears, but also indicative of meaningful technical damage.

STB’s movement is not isolated — the banking sector as a whole has been a focal point of selling in this session, with LPB down 4.55%, EIB down 2.64%, BID down 1.39%, though exceptions like TCB remain up 1.38%.

Amid the selloff, HAG tells an entirely different story

If STB exemplifies a setup under real stress, HAG demonstrates that not every stock moves in lockstep with the market. While most of the tape bleeds red, HAG surged 4.61%, closing at 14,750 VND, with volume reaching 8.66 million shares — more than four times its 20-period average and the highest volume in many months. The day’s trading range also widened noticeably versus prior sessions, a sign of genuine institutional interest.

This rally did not appear by chance. According to public disclosures, Hoang Anh Gia Lai reported Q1 2026 profit hitting record levels in company history, exceeding 1,100 billion VND thanks to successful debt restructuring, and has set a full-year 2026 profit target of 4,200 billion VND — double year-over-year. In parallel, Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc has repeatedly registered and completed additional share purchases throughout 2026, now raising his personal and family ownership stake above 30%. Nevertheless, HAG’s Trend Template structure currently meets only 3 out of 8 criteria — the stock remains in a phase of rebuilding technical foundation following an extended prior decline, and RSI has climbed to 73.2, entering a zone requiring more caution following such a strong single-session surge.

In simple terms: If debt restructuring news and record profits are “seeds” planted many months ago, then today’s surge is like those seeds suddenly sprouting on a stormy day — proof that a stock’s individual story can sometimes overpower broader market psychology.
In summary: STB and HAG represent opposite sides of the same session: a once-solid technical setup now facing genuine challenges, and a stock with much work to do technically but supported by an improving fundamental foundation. Both require further observation before drawing firmer conclusions.

Key price zones to monitor ahead

With the index now broken below its entire MA system and testing the old August support zone, the 1,725-1,755 point area becomes the most critical technical support reference level. Above, the 1,773-1,796 point zone — where MA50, MA150, and MA200 converge — now serves as resistance, having lost its support function.

2/10
TA Score — Weak, lowest level in entire report series
Price breaking below all MA levels, breadth continuing to deteriorate, and MACD at its deepest negative level are the most pronounced weak technical signals we have recorded since beginning this tracking series.

The following data points are compiled from public sources to cross-reference context: domestic media confirmed VN-Index down 19.32 points, with 344 declining stocks versus 258 advancing and 23 floor-limit declines; VIC is the most negatively impactful stock, removing over 12 index points (Source: Congluan, Ha Noi Moi Newspaper, Vietstock, 01/10/2026). ACBS Securities assessed session liquidity as comparable to the previous decline, indicating selling pressure remains dominant with no clear signs of weakening (Source: Congluan, 01/10/2026).
